Chapter Eight

Anabelle didn’t know what it was Veronica had tried to do with Maureen, but it obviously hadn’t worked. They were having breakfast together, sitting on Anabelle’s porch in the sun, eating toast and watching the chickens, and Veronica had a decidedly miserable set to her shoulders.

She still hadn’t told Anabelle what she had tried. Anabelle didn’t know if she should press it—she didn’t want to sound pushy or annoying, and surely Veronica would have a good reason to keep it from her? Anabelle wanted to think that was the case.

Anabelle knocked their shoulders together gently.

“Are you free during lunch today?” she asked. “We could have lunch together.”

“I’m always free,” Veronica said in a low voice, eyes away. “Because I don’t have a job. Or classes to go to. Or friends.”

This saddened Anabelle, but she couldn’t help but be amused by how morose and dramatic her girlfriend was being.

“Well, you have me,” she said.

Veronica finally turned to her, blinking in surprise. A blush rose to her face, tinting it pink, and the smile she gave Anabelle was pleased, if edged with some guilt Anabelle couldn’t parse.

“Yeah,” Veronica agreed. She leaned forward, toward Anabelle, and kissed her softly on the lips. Anabelle sighed against her mouth, body growing loose, and sought her mouth when she leaned back again. Veronica laughed quietly. “I’ll go to lunch with you. We can go to a small diner or something. I haven’t eaten out in so long…”

“It’ll be a treat,” Anabelle said. “You deserve it! We’ve been so stressed about all this. And how’s Daisy girl? Is she okay? She looks like she’s about to pop, I swear.”

The two of them turned to look at the dogs. They were lying under a tree close by, enjoying the shade. Sweets wasn’t glued to Daisy like he’d grown used to—he was just lying close. She wasn’t accepting touch so easily these days, with her big sensitive belly. She was having six babies, Veronica had confirmed the other day at the vet.

“She’s giving birth soon, yeah,” Veronica said, and that seemed to down her mood again. Her shoulders drooped and her eyelids lowered to a resigned half-mast. “We should have a couple days more, but not much more than that. Before, 63 days of gestation had seemed so long, I’d just wanted to meet the babies already. Now, it feels like it’s been only a couple of days, really.”

Anabelle wrapped an arm around Veronica’s waist and was rewarded by Veronica setting her head atop Anabelle’s.

“I hope they have her curly fur,” Anabelle said.

“I hope they have Sweets’ face,” Vee said.

Anabelle felt surprised.

“Then they’ll look more like pit bulls than poodles,” she said.

Veronica nodded, eyes a bit wet.

“Yeah.”

They did have lunch, and it was an amazing break from work. Anabelle rejoiced in taking Veronica to her favorite diner close by and they shared a milkshake in front of everyone, and even though Anabelle had been a bit afraid to be so blatantly not straight in public, Veronica held her hand and nothing happened.
